A Planted Workshop

We are lucky to be situated right on the market which is brimming with independent stall holders, Planted being one of them! Ran by Joleen, Planted sells plants, pots, terrariums and will be holding a terrarium workshop in our very own Garnet Stores on 14th March!

We caught up with Joleen to find out a little more about her and Planted!

TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOURSELF

I'm Joleen and I run Planted on Norwich Market.  I often surprise customers with my American accent.  I was born in Essex but moved to New York when I was four.  34 years later, I returned to the UK bringing my husband and two children with me.   I'm into plants (obviously), crochet, 60s and modern Psych rock, and vinyl.  I could happily live on wine, cheese and bread.

WHAT MADE YOU SET UP YOUR OWN BUSINESS?

I have always wanted to run my own shop but always felt it was too difficult in the US with health insurance, etc.  When I moved to Norwich 2.5 years ago, I was a huge fan of Bo-tanical.  When I saw that they were looking to sell their plant stall on the market, it felt like the perfect opportunity.  I had been a houseplant enthusiast for many years in the US and leaving all my plant babies was so hard.  Being surrounded by plants all day and chatting with customers is definitely my dream job.

WHO MAKES UP YOUR TEAM?

I'm in the shop Tuesday through Saturday but my husband, Dave, works Mondays so I can have a proper weekend.  He also helps me behind the scenes a bit.  It's definitely a family affair.  On school holidays, you might see one of my children eating Lucy's chips behind the counter.

WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR THE FUTURE?

My plan for the future is to keep growing this little business.  This year will see us begin to sell online and start running regular workshops.  I'd love to collaborate more with other independent businesses which makes this new partnership with The Garnet so exciting.

WHAT’S THE BEST THING ABOUT THE AREA YOU LIVE IN?

I love living in Norwich and being able to walk everywhere.  The city is full of so many great shops, restaurants, pubs and venues.  I feel like I still have many more to try after my short time living here.

DESCRIBE YOUR PERFECT NORFOLK WEEKEND

I'm definitely starting to enjoy the classic British winter beach walk followed by a visit to a cosy pub.  I'm also very happy spending a weekend rummaging through charity shops and checking out touring bands at Norwich Arts Center or Voodoo Daddys.
